Vellum began with a bag that failed. A store-bought shoulder bag, a cheap split-grain leather over a cardboard stiffener, and a strap that gave way the first winter it saw real use. The lesson was simple: a bag that isn't built to be repaired isn't built to be kept.

So we work with full-grain vegetable-tanned hides — the whole top of the hide, not a split for a finish — chosen for a tight, short grain that takes a hard crease without cracking. Every panel is cut by hand against a paper pattern, edges are burnished and painted a layer at a time, and each piece is saddle-stitched in waxed linen thread. Two needles, one length of thread: if a stitch ever does fail, the rest of the seam holds.

Hardware is solid brass, because it dulls instead of flaking. Linings are cotton twill or wool felt, chosen to protect what a bag carries. Nothing here is bonded, glued or hidden behind a coating — the material is the finish.

And because leather is a promise you make once: every bag we sell carries a ten-year repair promise. Send it back and we mend it — restitch a seam, replace a stud, re-cut a strap. A bag you keep is the only sustainable bag there is.
